FRISCO, Texas – The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced last week that the Cowboys’ first preseason game will be the Aug. 3 Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, against the Arizona Cardinals.
No training camp schedule has been announced yet, but team executive vice president Stephen Jones said the current plan is for the team to hold camp in Oxnard, Calif.
“Yes, as it sits right here,” Jones said. “There’s some things we’ve just got to be sensitive to with another team moving into L.A., but right now I think the plan is to be there.”
Typically teams start camp around two weeks before their first preseason game. Asked if the Cowboys would hold part of camp at their new world headquarters, The Star in Frisco, Jones said, “It’s not totally decided yet but I see us probably more than likely coming back after the second preseason game, the first one out there. We’ll probably play one out on the West Coast (after the Hall of Fame Game) and then head back this way.”
The preseason opener will be the Cowboys’ sixth all-time appearance in the Hall of Fame Game and their third since 2010. The extra preseason game is good experience for young players, Jones said.
“I still think our young players need more reps when it’s all said and done,” he said. “There’s a fine line between preparing your guys who you’re pretty sure are going to be a part of the team and that next deal is how to you develop some young guys that may come along fast enough, not unlike this year, but come along fast enough to be able to contribute and be a big part of our football team for ‘17.” Read
