Cowboys Address Their Backup Quarterback Depth, Re-sign Kellen Moore | Dallas Cowboys

FRISCO, Texas – Kellen Moore might have been the Cowboys’ Week 1 starter last September if not for a fractured fibula he suffered the first week of training camp.

Now the Cowboys are bringing back Moore as depth behind Dak Prescott, whose incredible Pro Bowl season made him the quarterback of the present and future in Dallas.

On Monday the club officially re-signed Moore, who appeared in three games (two starts) in 2015 for an injured Romo and completed 61 of 104 passes for 779 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Moore entered last year’s camp as the No. 2 quarterback but spent the entire season on injured reserve with the leg injury he suffered in practice. Prescott immediately moved into the primary backup spot and would be elevated to starter when Tony Romo injured his back three weeks later in the team’s third preseason game.

Moore previously spent three years in Detroit (2012-14), including the first two years with Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who then held the same title with the Lions.

The Cowboys now have three quarterbacks under contract: Prescott, Tony Romo and Moore. Mark Sanchez, who appeared in one game last season, remains an unrestricted free agent.

Romo is signed through 2019, but with Prescott entrenched as the starter, the 36-year-old’s future in Dallas has been a topic of outside speculation throughout the offseason.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on March 4, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said he didn’t rule out Romo returning in 2017 and didn’t view the March 9 start of the new league year as any type of team deadline for reaching a resolution with Romo. Read
